CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Emanuel Administration announced Tuesday it’s adding five ambulances -- just as mayoral challenger Paul Vallas was about to propose his own changes to Chicago’s Emergency Management Services.

Vallas called his news conference at City Hall to criticize the incumbent for inadequate emergency medical services. He proposes building the ambulance fleet to 100 from the current level of 75.

Shortly before he met reporters, the mayor’s office announced it was adding five advanced life support ambulances.

Vallas accused the mayor of trying to get the jump on him.

“It’s typical City Hall reacting to things, rather than being proactive,” he said. “We have an EMS department that really has been a poor stepchild within the fire department.”

A spokesperson for the Emanuel Administration said the new ambulances had been in the pipeline; they were numbered and equipped the past few weeks and inspected by the state Monday.
