CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The DuPage County states attorney is warning businesses and residents that burglaries are on the rise in the western suburbs.

DuPage County State's Attorney Bob Berlin said the county has experienced an 82 percent increase in burglaries since 2016. While many of those are businesses, many others are of vehicles, he said.

"The advice I can give everyone is to lock your cars if you leave them outside, and also the garage door opener, I would not leave that in your car if it is in your driveway, because a number of these car burglaries have turned into residential burglaries, using that garage door opener. A very distrubing trend," he said.

Another trend: Berlin said much of the crime in DuPage is committed by people from outside the county, using stolen cars.
