Drivers will face tougher penalties if they injure someone after failing to yield the right of way at a crosswalk, school zone or intersection.

State Rep. Lindsay Parkhurst of Kankakee said under previous Illinois law the penalty was comparably lenient. Now, a driver’s license could be suspended or revoked for failing to yield the right of way and causing serious injury.

Parkhurst hopes the risk of losing drivers licenses will get more drivers to pay attention, slow down and give the right of way to pedestrians.
