(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Health officials are urging the medical community and patients to go easy on the prescription and taking of antibiotics.

It’s part of U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, Nov. 18-24, which seeks to get the message out that antibiotics can be over-prescribed and rendered less effective. Plus, the medicines can have side effects.

In particular, antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as those that cause colds, flu, bronchitis, or runny noses. Medical professionals can advise patients on how best to deal with these conditions.

The DuPage County Health Department is partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the public-health initiative.
