WAUKEGAN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Lake County Illinois deputy sheriff accused of failing to help a domestic abuse victim has been arrested for official misconduct.

The department on Friday said a criminal investigation found Deputy Leonard Patterson "recklessly failed to perform duties required by law.”

That includes not arresting a domestic-abuse suspect, failing to help the victim and failing to make a police report.

The charges stem from a November incident in Beach Park in which a woman accused a man of hitting her in the face while he was driving.

The department says Patterson not only didn't investigate the allegation but encouraged the victim to get back in the suspect's car.

Undersheriff David Hare said after learning of the incident, they first checked to make sure the victim is all right.

Patterson turned himself in this morning and was released on bond.

The 38-year-old Port Barrington man remains on administrative leave while the department finishes its review.

Hare said they found Patterson committed other policy violations but nothing that rose to the level of additional criminal charges.
