(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Residents and community activists in Humboldt Park gathered Tuesday afternoon for a peace march and rally following Sunday’s wounding of an 8-year-old girl in a drive-by shooting.

The girl and other children were at a barbecue on Monticello near Augusta, when police say someone in a blue Dodge Charger fired several shots. One of the 8-year-old girl’s legs was grazed.

Fredrick Wallace is with the group Alliance of Local Service Organizations. He promises this is just the start of his group’s commitment to address the violence in Humboldt Park and get those who are violent to change their ways.

"The goal is to reach the shooters. We pass out the material and to let them know the stuff that we offer, so that they can come in and talk to us," Wallace said.

Organizers of the peace march and rally say they also want to send a message to residents of Humboldt Park that there are people willing to help them curb the violence and make their neighborhood safer.
