CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The open enrollment period for health insurance coverage in the Affordable Care Act marketplace ends this weekend.

The deadline is Saturday at midnight, WBBM Newsradio’s Rob Hart reports.

The Department of Health and Human Services said the deadline applies to those who do not have health insurance coverage, or who would like to change what they currently have.

"For those people who are completely satisfied with their insurance, if they don't go and re-enroll, they will automatically be re-enrolled in the plan that they're currently in," said Doug O'Brien, Regional Director of the Department of Health and Human Services in Chicago.

If you're not sure about your status, O'Brien suggests getting an "insurance checkup."

"It's a good idea for everybody to go to healthcare.gov or getcoveredillinois.gov and do what we call a checkup of your insurance," O'Brien said.

Much has changed in the five years since the first ACA plans went live in 2013.

O'Brien said 10 million more people have full-time jobs, which means they have or can get health insurance through their employer.
