CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Emanuel Administration is declaring 2019 the “Year of Chicago Theater.”

That can—and will—mean many different things.

From the stage of the Steppenwolf Theatre, Mayor Emanuel said it’s always the year of theater in Chicago. Mark Kelly, Commissioner of the Department of Consumer Affairs and Special Events, explained how next year will be a little different.

“We’ll provide additional financial grants to theater projects, encourage dialogue around inclusion and equity, and call on civic philanthropic arts and business leaders to support the theater community,” Kelly said.

Chicago stage and film actor Michael Shannon encouraged the effort, as a founder of A Red Orchid Theatre.
