CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo returned to the lineup Thursday after suffering an ankle injury earlier this week and hit a home run against the Cardinals.

Rizzo's surprising return came as his team began a pivotal home series against St. Louis, which leads the NL Central Division.

The Cubs were three games behind and tied for the second NL Wild Card spot with Milwaukee.

Rizzo rolled his ankle Sunday in a game against the Pirates. The injury had been expected to keep him out of the rest of the regular season.

Rizzo left Thursday's game in the sixth inning after providing the Cubs with their only run at that point in the game.
