CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Cubs Manager Joe Maddon has tried just about everyone else in the leadoff role, so why not Kris Bryant?

He turned to his third baseman, who never did it in the big leagues. And all he did was get three straight singles.

“That first bat, my heart was beating a little faster than usual,” Bryant said after the Cubs’ 3-1 victory over the Pirates. “But then after that it’s just, you know, the flow of the game. It really wasn’t too much different for me.

“I mean I’m not trying to change myself because just because I’m hitting leadoff or a different spot in the order. I still like to go out there and just be myself.”

Bryant admitted he hasn’t been playing the way he’d like to this season, so far. He hasn’t hit a home run in 22 games.

Maddon signaled Bryant will resume batting first on Saturday.
