Milwaukee improved to 88-70 with the victory and clinched at least the second National League wild-card spot. At 82-75 entering its game at Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Chicago can't finish with more than 87 wins.

It marks the first time the Cubs have missed the playoffs since 2014 and the first time they've done so during Manager Joe Maddon's tenure. The Cubs' undoing came in the form of a seven-game losing streak that they took into play Wednesday, including a devastating four-game sweep at the hands of the rival Cardinals over the weekend. At the same time, the Brewers were on a scorching hot streak, winning 17 of their last 19 games.

The Cubs' streak of reaching the playoffs in each of the past four years was a franchise record but won't be extended.
