CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The CTA this week beefed up rush-hour service on the Blue Line, although not as much as officials would like.

The big crowds on the Blue Line mean some riders have to wait for several trains just to board.

Spokesman Brian Steele says CTA is doing what it can by adding two morning trips between 8 and 8:30 a.m., and another in the afternoon between 5 and 5:30 p.m.

It also has transferred some newer, higher-capacity 'L' trains to Blue Line service.

Steele concedes this is only a stopgap. He says the real problem is electrical power. The branch cannot get enough and new substations must be built.

Those are only in the preliminary planning stage.
