Crystal Lake Teen Freed From ICE Detention

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An 18-year-old Honduran refugee slept as a free person Thursday night, much to the relief of many in the Crystal Lake community, who have been supportung her the last four months.

In October, Meydi Guzman Rivas and her father Fabio showed up for an immigration court hearing and were taken into custody for allegedly missing a previous hearing. 

The pair have been in the United States - Crytal Lake specifically - for mor than a year.

The 18-year old and her father fled Honduras because a gang wanted to make the young woman their property. 

Rivas was freed Thursday night and said she is excited to be free. Before being taken into custody, the young woman had been on track to graduate from Crystal Lake Central High School in the spring.

Her father remains in custody. Attorneys were working on his release as well.
