CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Classes resume in the Chicago Public Schools a month from Saturday and CPS is hosting several back-to-school bashes around the city to help students and parents get ready.

Free immunizations and information about programs such as Medicaid and free or reduced cost meals for low-income students were just some of what’s being offered at the back-to-school bashes such as one at Michele Clark Magnet High School on the West Side.

Chip Johnson, the Chief of Family and Community Engagement for the Chicago Public Schools, said he hopes the back-to-school bashes will help boost attendance on the first day of schools, which is one of the ways the state determines how much money schools get.

"They can register and go meet the principals of their enrolling schools and get ready with whatever school supplies they need," Johnson said.
