(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago police say they have a strategy for dealing with carjackings, a crime that has seen a resurgence in the city.

So far this year, Chicago has experienced a 75% increase in carjackings over the same period last year, Chicago Police Department First Deputy Supt. Anthony Riccio said Friday.

Police have responded to 117 attacks so far this year, compared with 67 in the same period last year, he said.

In response, CPD is reconvening a joint task force with its state, county and federal counterparts. The task force reduced city carjackings to a “six-year low” just a couple of years ago, Riccio said.

The department’s immediate plan includes putting more officers on the street in areas seeing the most carjackings; having cops drive decoy vehicles and using helicopters.
