CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago couple is hosting a fundraiser on what would have been their daughter’s sixth birthday to help other parents cope with pediatric cancer.

Pammy Kramer said her daughter, Maddie, maintained her joyful outlook after her cancer diagnosis and throughout her chemotherapy.

After her death, Pammy and Scott Kramer decided to form a foundation in Maddie’s honor called Dancing While Cancering.

They give families who’ve just received a cancer diagnosis a “Smile Pack” with decorations for the hospital room and small instruments to help them keep a positive spirit during their fight.

The Lakeview couple said they were blown away by the generosity last year when they raised $30,000.

Starting at midnight on Friday, they’ll hold their second Smile-a-thon for the backpacks to be distributed at 16 hospitals in 11 states.
