(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Lake County, Illinois commissioners are expected to ask the Illinois General Assembly and incoming Gov. J.B. Pritzker to give them the power to unseat a leader they appoint.

The inability to remove Aaron Lawlor as Lake County board chairman became an embarrassment in July when he dropped out of sight for rehab, and an investigation was launched into misuse of his county credit card.

The Illinois State Police investigation into tens of thousands of dollars of purchases continues, and board members no longer have credit cards. But new county Chairwoman Sandy Hart said the only way to make removal possible is though state legislation -- a change she has made a priority since taking office a month ago.

It is not a slam dunk because any such measure would grant the same power in any county in which the commissioners select a chairman from their own. The board was to vote Tuesday whether to send the recommendation to the legislature.
