CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago police officer who was posted outside a potentially volatile funeral this week had to leave before gunfire erupted and wounded several people.

Chicago police said they had two sources that provided intelligence before a rapper's funeral Monday that indicated there could be trouble.

A squad car was posted outside the church, in the 9200 block of South Cottage Grove.

Chicago Police Lt. William Gentile of the Deployment Operations Center said there were three emergencies while the officer was stationed there, and the officer had to leave to respond.

That left a vacuum at the church. Six people were shot outside as the funeral was ending.

“Unfortunately circumstances weren’t in our favor,” Gentile said.

Gentile was at a meeting Friday of the Funeral and Cemetery Violence Task Force, held in Forest Park.
