NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A baby deer born moments after a car hit its mother in Naperville is on the mend, thanks to the help of police officers, wildlife experts and others.

The doe, hit in Naperville on Monday, died, and so did one of its full-term fawns.

The responding police officer broke out a First Aid kit because the surviving fawn had a broken leg, a city spokesperson told WBBM Newsradio. The police officer placed the fawn in the squad car and waited for animal control officers.

Staff at a wildlife refuge in Sycamore got a veterinarian to come in on a holiday to set the animal’s leg.

The fawn can now stand and is getting special mother's milk from farmers who had extra supplies.

It will take a week to see if the baby deer will make it, officials say, but it’s getting lots of attention
