Congressman Garcia Backs Pawar For Chicago Treasurer

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ameya Pawar has picked up the endorsement of Congressman Chuy Garcia in the race for Chicago treasurer.

While the alderman didn't get Garcia's support last year when he ran for governor in a crowded primary, Pawar did make an impression.

"Alderman Pawar won my heart. I was quite moved by his vision" Garcia said Sunday during a press conference at the Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Michigan Avenue.

He noted Pawar's support of a higher minimum wage and paid sick leave in the Chicago City Council as signs of his progressive chops that Garcia feels the city needs in its next treasurer.

Pawar said he wants to do more than just invest the city's money. He said he would avoid companies that have fed the opioid epidemic or are hurting the environment.

He proposes the city own a bank to help people refinance student debt and get low-interest loans.

Neither Garcia nor Pawar have made an endorsement in the crowded race for mayor.

Pawar says he's busy enough focusing on his own campaign but does think the increased attention will mean more people will vote.

State Representative Melissa Conyears-Ervin and CPA Peter Gariepy are also running for treasurer.
