Mendoza Asked Inevitable Question: Running For Mayor?

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza is among those mentioned by political insiders as a possible candidate for Chicago Mayor now that Rahm Emanuel isn’t running, but she was resisting the pull Wednesday.

Democrat Mendoza, making an appearance at the City Club of Chicago, fended off questions and insisted she’s focused on a re-election bid to her state office.

“I keep telling everybody else what I’ve been telling you, honestly: I’m fully focused on the next 62 days,” she said. “I don’t take anything lightly, ever.

“I know because I’m the comptroller today how important this office is to the people of the state of Illinois.”

Emanuel on Tuesday sent shockwaves through the Chicago and state political landscapes by announcing he won’t seek a third term.

That has changed the dynamics of the mayoral contest, which was already crowded with a wide range of declared challengers.

Ald. Ricardo Munoz predicted either he or former Emanuel opponent Jesus “Chuy” Garcia will enter the race.
