CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It was a South Shore Line commuter train that fatally struck the two Chicago police officers Monday.

And Tuesday, the president of the South Shore says their hearts and prayers are going out to the families of the officers.

Michael Noland said it's been a very sad day, after a tough night.

"It's always difficult when you have a pedestrian incident. We were informed that two individuals were involved, then we got the even worse news that those two individuals were Chicago Police officers who were risking their lives for the rest of us."

Noland said the line was shut down for 12 hours while investigators and other officials were at the scene on the Far South Side.

Noland would not comment on the specific train crew involved in the accident, but he says counselors are always made available to crews.
