(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of police officers and sheriff's deputies joined the funeral procession for McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Keltner Wednesday, and people stood beside the road to pay their respects.

As the hearse and the long procession started its final mile back to the funeral home in Huntley, Emmy Cratty of Lake in the Hills stood by the side of Dundee Road with her children.

"I think that they need at a young age to learn to pay respects to our officers and our firemen,” she told WBBM Newsradio’s Steve Miller.

Her children are 8, 5 and 2.  Her son is close to the age of Deputy Keltner's two sons.

"We explained what happened.  A daddy lost his life and he's up in heaven,” she said. “They understand that those kids don't have their daddy anymore. My two-year-old, she's still kind of young, but she's knows that someone's 'up there.'”
