CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It has been two years since Chicago Police Cmdr. Paul Bauer was shot and killed in the Loop.

Thursday afternoon, friends, family and peers gathered for a memorial at the headquarters of the 18th Police District where Bauer worked.

"We're going to ring the bell 29 times in honor of Commander Bauer's star number, number 29."

And the bell began to toll.

Mayor Lightfoot: "On a cold February day, not unlike today, Commander Bauer was on his way to a meeting at City Hall when a fellow officer radioed for assistance for a fleeing suspect in the Thompson Center.

"And without a thought for self, Commander Paul Bauer responded to that call, fulfilling again his sacred oath to serve and protect."

Commander Bauer's widow Erin: "Paul is always in our thoughts and prayers, and we want to thank you from the bottoms of our hearts. We love you, Paul, and we miss you."
