Church School Installs Intruder-Alert System

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- St. Benedict Preparatory School on the North Side says it's just installed a security system that is a first for a church school in Chicago.

It's called BluePoint. They are blue pull-alarms that have been placed throughout St. Ben's Prep School and the church property near Irving Park and Leavitt.

If an armed intruder comes in, the idea is that anybody can pull the alarm, just like they would pull a fire alarm, and alert authorities and teachers to the location.

"It will alert them to where on campus the box has been pulled so the teacher can make the decision if it's safe to run and escape, or if they have to hide,” said Rachel Gemo, head of the St. Ben's Prep School.

She acknowledges that some children may pull the alarm, just because they can.

"Obviously it's tempting, right?  And there will be some students that are curious: is this really true, does this really happen?"

But Gemo said the bigger lesson is the students need to be empowered if there ever is an intruder at St. Ben's.
