CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Seventy high school students boarded buses Thursday night on the South Side to travel to Atlanta for a unique opportunity to visit several colleges.

Despite the bitter cold as they gathered at 87th Street and the Dan Ryan, the young women were excited about the chance to travel to the Atlanta-area to visit several Historically Black Colleges and Universities – or, HBCUs.

Cierrah Arrington is a senior at Chicago Vocational Career Academy. She said her family can't afford to send her on trips to see potential colleges, so the bus trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her.

The bus trip was sponsored by the group Working on Womanhood, which says for many of these girls this might be their only chance to visit potential colleges outside of the Chicago-area.

The students will spend three days in the Atlanta-area.
