CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- When Skates the Wolf makes his way to center ice before tonight's Chicago Wolves home opener against Grand Rapids, he'll have a special prize to show off -- a proclamation making Sunday, Oct. 14 "Chicago Wolves Day" in  Illinois.

"We are absolutely thrilled," said team President Mike Gordon.  "We're honored, and really thankful that we've been able to bring this product to Chicago and the Chicagoland area for 25 years."

Tonight's opener will mark the first showing of the team's new pregame pyrotechnic extravaganza, and the Wolves are touting a number of fan-friendly enhancements for the season.

"We have free parking this year, which is pretty cool," Gordon said.  "We've also rolled back concession prices.  When we were first started 25 years ago, our owners' vision was to continue to grow the sport and to provide accessible sports entertainment for families and for the community.  And one of those things is having a price point where people can afford it."

Having a good product helps more than anything, though, and through at least the first two games, the Wolves are looking sharp.

"We're off to a 2-and-0 start, we were on the road in Colorado, which is always a tough place with altitude and everything," Gordon said.  "So it looks like the team is already gelling.  We have a lot of players back from last season, from a team that won the division championship.  Half of our players have NHL experience.  We have three first-round draft choices, three second-round NHL Draft choices, so...we're ready to go."
