CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago police are investigating an officer-involved shooting outside of a bar in Lakeview over the weekend.

Police were called to Tai’s Til 4, 3611 N. Ashland Ave., around 5:15 a.m. Sunday morning.  An armed man had shot another person in the neck and cheek and attempted to run from the scene, interim CPD Superintendent Charlie Beck said at a press conference.

Chicago Police Supt. Anthony Gugliemi explains what happened next.

"They found an individual had shot another individual and officers pursued that man. They got into an armed confrontation about a block and a half away. That man fired at police officers. Police officers returned fire. The man was critically wounded. He succumbed to his injuries," Gugliemi said.

The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene and a gun was recovered.

The other person who was shot, a 35-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for surgery and is in critical condition.

“The officer who fired was transferred to a medical facility. He is being treated for bumps and bruises. He was not shot, but he did fall during his pursuit of the offender,” Beck said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released details about the fatality.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating, Beck said. And the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days, per department policy.
