CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The popular grocery store chain Treasure Island appears to be preparing to close its doors.

Employees at the stores in Hyde Park and Streeterville told customers Saturday that the chain will close all locations after business on Fri., Oct. 12. The chain has been in business since 1963.

The chain has seven locations. One of them, in Lincoln Park, closed earlier this month. T-I, as many call it, has Chicago stores in Streeterville, the Gold Coast, Hyde Park, Old Town, on Broadway, and in North Suburban Wilmette.

For decades, Treasure Island was synonymous with luxury and gourmet foods.

Earlier this week, a store director at the Hyde Park store told the Hyde Park Herald that his location was having delivery issues with vendors, and that was why many of the store's shelves were empty.

The University of Chicago's student newspaper reported Saturday that a school official told a Hyde Park resident in an email:  "We just got notice last night that the company is going out of business." The university owns the lot where the Hyde Park Treasure Island is located.

Officials fromTreasure Island have not yet responded for comment.
