CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago firefighters had to extricate a man trapped between two buildings on the near North Side early Sunday morning.

They were responding to a call around 1 a.m. of a person who had fallen off a building near Huron and Dearborn.

Chicago Fire Battalion Chief Stephen Little said they found a 28-year-old man trapped inside a light shaft after falling four stories from the roof of the residential building.

The man was conscious, talking and in distress, Little said.

After ruling out trying to use pulleys to lift up the man, firefighters broke through several walls to get to him.

Little said they used sledgehammers, tools and "brute force" to break through drywall, cinderblock and brick before getting to the victim.

Two paramedics crawled through the opening to treat him before they took the man to the hospital in critical condition.

Little said it took about about 45 minutes to rescue the man.
