CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago has its first Crossign Guard of the Year: a soft-spoken woman who has helped students at 45th and Wallace for more than a quarter century.

Maredith Robertson was honored Wednesday by both Graham Elementary and Saint Gabriel's Catholic schools.

Robertson said she always wanted to become a crossing guard and gives others who want the job the same advice she received as a child: Smile and tell people to have a good day.

After receiving her award, Robertson was back at it, helping students safely cross the road. She said she’d like to keep working, as long as her legs hold out.
