CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thanks to social media, there's a new police recruit pouncing the streets of Chicago.

It started with a tweet from the Chicago Police Department’s 14 District, highlighting a Michigan police department’s cat recruit and another from the TV show, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” on Tuesday, which was Global Cat Day.

In response, one user asked how many retweets it would take for Chicago to hire a police cat of its own. More than 500 retweets later, the district’s twitter page introduced followers to “Pawfficer Gizmo,” the first-ever recruit in the CPD “Meownted Unit,” along with a picture of the 8-year-old cat donning a CPD cap.

“Gizmo is Chicago tough with a soft side,” the tweet said.
