CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Thousands of people on Chicago's Southwest Side got free chicken during a drive-through giveaway in Marquette Park from the owner of a nearby meat and seafood processing company who wanted to help neighbors during the pandemic.
Daniel Leon, the CEO of El Rey USA Meats and Seafood, brought 4,000 pounds of chicken to Marquette Park, where people in vehicles drove up one at a time to get the free poultry.
Leon said giving away chicken is a small way he can help deal with a massive problem.
"We know that there are 1.3 million people in millions with no jobs... so we gotta help," Leon said.
He said he's seen firsthand the struggles many in his community face in getting enough food, either because of job loss due to the pandemic or from already being impoverished.

A longtime member of the community, he said he always wanted to do something for the community that has given him so many opportunities. He decided the COVID-19 pandemic was the time to do it.
Vehicles passed through Marquette Park for hours — some arriving hours before the giveaway began at 10 a.m. — each receiving a bag of chicken until all 40,000 pounds were gone.
