CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Those impacted by Hurricane Florence got some assistance from the Chicago-area on Tuesday, as part of the CBS Chicago Cares Telethon.

As volunteers answered the phones inside the CBS-2 studios, others like Ron Leffler gathered donations outside.

"The compassion that I see with the fellow volunteers is something I've never seen in my life," Leffler said. "It gives me a nice outlook towards humanity."

Holly Baker with the American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois said phones began ringing and donations started flowing in at 6 a.m.

"Last year, we saw it with the three hurricanes," Baker said. "So far with Hurricane Florence, I've seen it again. People are really willing to stop what they're doing, refocus and try to help people going through something really terrible like a hurricane."

Baker said the telethon brought in over $200,000 by 10 a.m.
