CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The spring allergy season in the Chicago-area is off to a slow start, but allergy sufferers are about to face a double whammy.

WBBM's Jim Gudas reports.

The tree pollen season that normally starts in March was delayed by cold weather, while the grass pollen season appears to be right on time.

Dr. Rachna Shah, an allergist at Gottleib Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park, said this could mean unusually severe symptoms for some people.

Shah said if you are allergic to tree and grass pollen, now would be a good time to start using allergy medications or nasal sprays to reduce the severity of symptoms when the pollen levels peak.
