CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral challenger Lori Lightfoot is proposing ethics reforms she says will clean up government and level the playing field.

Lightfoot’s proposals for ethics reforms begin with mayoral term limits and another idea that appears aimed at powerful Ald. and lawyer Ed Burke, among others.

The nine-point plan would limit mayors to two terms and ban city employees, including elected officials, from having outside jobs that conflict with their duties.

That would include lawyers such as Burke, who handle real estate and zoning cases.

Lightfoot vows to strengthen the Inspector General’s oversight and stop the city from fighting so many Freedom of Information Act requests. It’s about restoring public confidence, she said Tuesday.

How do you get the City Council to vote for that? Lightfoot says a mayor has to lead. She's also urging voters to make ethics an issue in the aldermanic campaigns.

Mayor Emanuel’s campaign says the incumbent has already increased transparency and accountability.
