DOWNERS GROVE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The West Suburban Humane Society broke ground Tuesday on a shelter that will help many more stray and abandoned animals.

The group’s executive director, Carolyn Mossberger, said the current facility is a converted tiny house at the corner of Stonewall and Odgen in Downers Grove.

The new structure will care for stray and abandoned animals from the western suburbs but also as far away as Southern Illinois.

The new facility is scheduled to open next March.
