RIVERSIDE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Riverside police never heard an excuse like this before.

The side door on a garage was left unlocked and Police Chief Tom Weitzel said Alan Lekkas saw it as an opportunity.

Lekkas is charged with taking a men's Diamondback Performance bike out of that garage, valued at $1,000, and leaving a men's mountain bike in its place.

Police got called to the scene on the 7200 block of West Ogden. Later, they spotted Lekkas and the stolen bike.

Lekkas reportedly said he shouldn't be prosecuted because he left another bike in place of the one he took.

“Which is really one of the most bizarre statements I’ve ever heard,” Weitzel said.

Had the bicycle been outside, the charge might only have been theft. Because it was in an attached garage, the charge is burglary -- a felony.
