CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois' transportation chief is warning drivers to be alert for deer on roadways during mating season for the animals.

If you think it won't happen to you, it can. There were more than 15,000 deer-vehicle collisions in the state last year.

Transportation Secretary Omer Osman said the first instinct when bearing down on a deer in the road is to swerve. But Osman says that could make a driver lose control and increase a crash's severity.

The best practice is, "Don't veer for deer,” he said.

He recommends paying attention to deer-crossing signs and watch roadsides for the reflection of deer eyes in headlights.
