Bears' Cody Parkey On Regrouping: 'I Know I'm A Great Kicker'

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- Bears kicker Cody Parkey will make the 39-mile trip from Halas Hall to downtown Chicago to Soldier Field on Wednesday night, adding a new element to his weekly preparation after a disastrous last Sunday.

Parkey missed four kicks in the Bears' 34-22 win over the Lions -- two extra points, two field goals -- off the uprights, which was partially the byproduct of unique wind patterns at Soldier Field.

Practicing mid-week at Soldier Field is something many Bears kickers have done in the past, most notably Robbie Gould, the franchise's all-time leading scorer.

"Just check all my boxes, make sure I'm doing everything I possibly can to make kicks," Parkey said. "I do that every single week. This is just adding a little extra something to that."

Both the Bears and Parkey chalked up Sunday's misfortune as simply that, pointing to the unique circumstances of missing four kicks off the post. Since at least 2002, no kicker had ever missed more than two kicks in a game off the uprights until Parkey did so Sunday, according to STATS. Since 2002, no kicker has ever missed more than four kicks off the uprights in a season, per STATS.

Signed to a four-year deal this offseason and given $9 million guaranteed, Parkey is 13-of-18 on field goals and now 30-of-32 on extra points this season.

"I don't get down on myself or anything like that," Parkey said. "I know I'm a great kicker. I'm just going to go out there on Sunday and try my best."

Parkey is far from the first NFL kicker to have a bad game this season. Among the poor performances was that of Packers kicker Mason Crosby, who missed an extra point and four field goals in his team's 31-23 loss to the Lions on Oct. 7. A week later, Crosby kicked the game-winning field goal in a Packers victory on Monday Night Football.

The Bears (6-3) are holding out hope that Parkey gets a moment of redemption this Sunday night in their primetime game against the Vikings (5-3-1), with first-place on the line at Soldier Field.

"Mason Crosby is a great kicker, and it was really awesome," Parkey said. "Hopefully I can go out and do the same thing."
