CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Two women were taken to a hospital in serious condition after the car they were in crashed into a building in Edgewater Tuesday morning and tore three balconies off the front.

On his way home from dropping his sons off at school, Alvaro Toledo says he was stopped at a traffic light on Broadway at Hollywood before 8 a.m. In his rearview mirror, he recalled seeing another driver going fast, so he tried to move.

"And I tried to move to the left side, but the lady hit me. When they hit me, the lady left,” he said.

After she left, she hit a building on the west side of Broadway.

"We heard a loud boom and weren't sure what actually happened,” a woman who lives in the building said. “We saw that, actually, the balconies were missing from the building. So, we evacuated the building."

In the same block, James Gibson was getting ready to teach a CPR class at Chicago Heart Training. He heard the crash and ran over.

"And there was a woman in the backseat who was screaming, and I tried to just calm her down,” he said.

Gibson then helped the driver until the fire department arrived, he said.
