(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The executive director of the Aurora Historical Society says the pending demolition of the Masonic Temple following a massive fire means the western suburb will lose part of its history and identity.

John Jaros said Tuesday the Masonic Temple was literally and figuratively a symbol of Aurora.

The imposing five-story building perched on a hill was also a key part of Aurora’s skyline and an unusually large example of a style of architecture that was popular in the early 20th Century, he said.

Aurora has several other historic buildings that have been abandoned over the years. Jaros said there are plans to renovate and repurpose those buildings.

Hopefully, that reduces the chances those buildings will share the Temple’s fate, he said.
