Aurora Cops Release Video Of Workplace Shooting Response

April 17, 2019 - 3:33 pm

AURORA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Aurora Police Department has released surveillance video from the deadly Feb. 15 workplace shooting at the Henry Pratt factory that shows the gunman firing at officers from a foyer, followed by police and SWAT team members storming the property.

There is no video of Gary Martin killing five workers at the Pratt facility after he was terminated from his job.

Still, Aurora police advise caution before viewing the edited material, culled from four camera setups (one interior location and three parking lot locations), because it may be disturbing to some. The 8 1/2 minutes of content was posted Wednesday afternoon on the department's Facebook page and covers a block of time between 1:50 p.m. and 2:18 p.m.

At one point, the 45-year-old Martin is seen cagily pacing in a foyer area before he eventually fires through a glass door, in the direction of responding police officers. The latter sections of video show officers running across the parking lot and an armored vehicle breaking through the front doors. By then, Martin has left that particular area of the manufacturing facility.

Martin was fatally wounded during a shootout with police who pursued him deeper into the factory.

He no longer had a valid permit to own a gun in Illinois because of a past criminal offense but still had a firearm, according to authorities. He apparently came prepared for trouble, with several magazines of ammunition, when he entered the plant near downtown Aurora that day.

Five police officers were wounded as they engaged the gunman.

The police department’s complete caption for the video posted on Facebook is as follows:

“We have chosen to publish a portion of the surveillance video which captured the horrible shooting event on February 15, 2019. We have already posted emergency radio traffic and 911 calls to the police regarding this incident.

As with our decision to release audio related to this event, we were not careless in our judgment here, and we understand the disturbing nature of these images. We understand, however, that as a matter of public interest and our ongoing commitment to transparency within our community, we agree that you have a right to see for yourself what transpired at the Henry Pratt facility that day where, sadly, five members of our community lost their lives, and five of our police officers were shot while simply doing their jobs.

Portions of this video have been excluded to protect the privacy rights of those involved. Also, there is no significant surveillance video available from inside the facility, other than that which captures the front foyer area, which is shown. These surveillance cameras did not record sound. This video depicts the shooter as he prepares to ambush approaching officers, and shows the officers’ initial approach and subsequent entry into the Henry Pratt facility. The shooter was in possession of one pistol and eight pistol magazines, and we confirmed that he fired 64 rounds during this incident.

WARNING: This video may be disturbing to some. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.”
