EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Police from Evanston and Northwestern University said they are stepping up patrols in order to find the men responsible for a series of attacks targeting women on campus.

The attacks have focused on the Sorority Quad area of Northwestern’s south campus, near the busy intersection of Chicago Avenue and Sheridan Road.

In e-mails to students, faculty and staff, police describe attacks in which the women were grabbed by the arm, by the backpack, or from behind. One attacker spoke with a heavy Russian accent. In other cases, the man made rude remarks or asked for a phone number.

Students said they welcome the extra patrols, which include undercover officers, but say what they are being told now has been common knowledge among students for weeks.

One man has been arrested. He is 21 and has no connection to Northwestern. But the attacks have continued.
