CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some Chicago-based celebrities were making big--and not very positive--headlines in 2019.

"Empire" star Jussie Smollett made healdines when he was accused of fabricating a hate-driven attack on him last January. The story became a headache for Chicago police as well as Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, among others.

The Lifetime documentary "Surviving R. Kelly" that aired in early January reignited interest in the long-rumored sexual allegations involving R&B superstar R. Kelly and underaged girls. Kelly's facing state and federal charges related to so-called sex crimes and other offenses previously recorded by music reporter and critic Jim DeRogatis. A six-part follow-up documentary, "Surviving R. Kelly - Part II: The Reckoning," will premiere on Lifetime at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Both of the men's cases will continue into 2020.
