CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- During an early morning traffic stop Friday on the South Side, officers say they found three assault weapons and ammo that can pierce body armor.

Officer Michelle Tannehill of the Chicago Police Department's 3rd District in Greater Grand Crossing, said they believe these weapons are no place for Chicago and they believe they were going to be used to carry out violent acts in the city.

"We believed the offenders, who are in custody and are currently questioning, had ill intentions to carry out violent acts here in Chicago," Tanehill said.

Police said three people are in custody and have offered few details because charges are pending and they have 48 hours to file those charges.
