CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – If you were downtown Wednesday night and saw video being projected onto the side of the Merchandise Mart, it was not an advertising stunt.

It was the media preview of "Art on the Mart."

Mayor Emanuel said the days when the Chicago River was a cesspool are gone. Instead, he said, it's a model known worldwide. The projected artwork is something he expects other cities to imitate, he said.

The full public debut is Saturday night.

"Art on the Mart" is not a one-off stunt. Artwork will be projected every Wednesday through Sunday nights, each year from March through December.

The mayor hopes it helps kick-start the western portion of the Chicago Riverwalk.
