CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Mayor Emanuel's decision not to run for re-election may have an impact on a big job creator.

Amazon has yet to decide where to place its new headquarters, and Emanuel’s decision not to seek a third term could have an effect on whether Chicago stays in the running.

The retail giant could very well have second thoughts, Greg Hinz with Crain’s Chicago Business tells the Noon Business Hour.

“Is Amazon saying, ‘Now, wait a minute, we have to know who we’re dealing with. Are we dealing with a business-friendly mayor, are we dealing with a populist who hates big business and wants to tax the heck out of it?”

Chicago’s reputation as a violent city also isn’t helping, says Bob Reed of Chicago Magazine.

“I think Amazon would have to think long and hard about coming to a city that has that kind of image and hasn’t been able to get its arms around the problem,” Reed told the show Tuesday.

Amazon has narrowed it down to 20 finalist cities.
