CHICAGO (AP) --  Bail was set at $5,000 Sunday for a 29-year-old man who was body-slammed by a Chicago police officer in an arrest caught on video. Bernard Kersh appeared before a Cook County judge Sunday.

The bystander's 41-second video showed the officer lifting Kersh off his feet, then slamming his body hard onto the street. Kersh's head appeared to strike the curb. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon.

Kersh's attorney said "he is lucky to be alive."

Police said the officer approached Kersh for drinking alcohol at a bus stop. They said he became "irate," licked the officer's face and made threats before spitting. Kersh reportedly has schizophrenia.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi previously called the officer's actions "concerning." The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.
