CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In a WBBM Newsradio debate, West Suburban Republican Congressman Peter Roskam and Democratic challenger Sean Casten slamed each other on tax policies.

Recently, Roskam brought some local businesspeople to Washington to testify about the benefits of President Trump’s tax cuts. But his Democratic rival, businessman Sean Casten, had bitter words for the policies. He calls the tax bill massively unfair, and designed NOT to help the middle-class, but the most affluent people.

But, Republican Roskam said Casten’s tax proposals are no boon for the middle class either. He said Casten is supporting a hike in the gas tax and the Social Security tax, among others

Casten did not dispute the list, but says tax policies need to be equitable.

On the issue of immigration, six-term Congressman Roskam says he hopes Congress won’t put off action on immigration reform until after the November elections. But he admits the signs aren’t good: He says Congress tried but failed to pass two bills that could have solved the problems of DACA students and separated families.

His 6th District Democratic opponent says Roskam’s words don’t match his actions, or inactions.  He said Roskam did not vote for a discharge motion that would have allowed a vote on a different immigration bill to help DACA students.

Neither man expects action on health care, but they disagree about what should happen.
